University worries

Please help me! I’m in need of advice regarding my disability and university.

I have now made up my mind and come to the conclusion that I want to go to uni to study french and business. However, there is one important issue… my disability. Due to my cerebral palsy, I struggle with my writing – it’s quite slow because of my lack of fine motor skills. This means that I will need a support assistant to take notes for me as it would be impossible for me to take down the notes as the lecturer speaks. Additionally I will also need extra time in exams. I will also have to disclose my slight speech impediment and the fact that I was exempted from the oral examination. So I would really appreciate it if anyone who has been to uni or are going, and have a similar disability, could answer these questions for me:

  • Did you mention your disability in your personal statement?
  • Did you call/e-mail the universities before applying?
  • Did you actually visit the universities beforehand?
  • Did your school take care of it?

Thank you in advance, I am really worried! I really want to go to to university and want to prepare and disclose these issues to the university as soon as possible so that they accept me but I don’t know how to 😦 Therefore if you have any advice I could really use it right now.

  1. Firstly you need to apply to the course, then when applying for student fininance you need to apply for DSA. DSA will help you get specialist equipment and also fund someone to help you take notes (if you need it)

  2. Hi, I’ve just discovered your blog. I’m 18 and also have mild cp, as well as dyspraxia. Your blog is great! I also blog, mainly about dyspraxia but have a few cp related posts planned. I’m starting university next month, due to my disability I’m going to live at home and commute each day. My advice would be to definitely visit the universities beforehand and find out what their disability support is like. When you apply, for me there was an option on the form to say whether you have a disability or not. I didn’t mention my disability on my personal statement though, although I did mention that I take part in disability sport. Once your university place is confirmed they might ask you for more details about your disability. I went along to a meeting at my university where they discussed the support that would be put in place and the information that would be given to staff members. Universities can often provide lots of support, for example one of the arrangements for me is that I will be using a digital voice recorder in lectures. Feel free to ask me any other questions if you have any. Hope it all goes well with applying 🙂

  3. Thank you so much for the advice! Many people have advised me to visit the universities beforehand as well. I might consider doing that. Just one question, did you (and if so, when?) apply for the DSA? I wish you the very best at university 🙂 x
